Abstract: This master's thesis explores technological evolution in the context of the internet, from its initial version, Web 1.0, to the emergence of the metaverse, highlighting its transformative potential in the field of mental health. The research contextualizes the advancement of immersive and interactive technologies, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, which accelerated the adoption of telemedicine and pointed to the metaverse as an innovation vector in mental health treatment and care. Using the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology, the dissertation aims to build and evaluate artifacts that allow the transformation of existing practices into more effective solutions, specifically through the development of a conceptual model for therapeutic care in mental health within the metaverse. Through a narrative review of the literature and a case study involving interviews with psychology professionals, the work investigates the feasibility and efficacy of using the metaverse as a therapeutic tool, comparing it to conventional care methods. The study is justified by the emerging need to explore new approaches in the face of the growing global mental health crisis, identifying the metaverse not only as a technological innovation but as an opportunity to advance in mental health treatment and care. This research aims to contribute to the field of mental health by proposing a new care paradigm that integrates advanced technologies to create virtual environments that support effective therapeutic practices, presenting a conceptual model for mental health care/treatment in the metaverse as well as identifying the progress, benefits, difficulties, challenges, and opportunities of therapeutic care/treatment in mental health in the metaverse.
