The main theme of this research is the study of bamboo as a constructive element, recognizing this material as a more sustainable construction alternative. The objective of this study was to evaluate the applicability of bamboo as a construction material in a bioclimatic zone 1 region, through the proposition of a modular construction system and the simulation of the thermal performance of vertical bamboo panels. Evaluating the performance factors and requirements, it was decided to research issues related to habitability, through the study of the thermal performance of bamboo panels of a residential building. After the delimitation of the area for research, the choice of the building was based on a study of the local constructions through a photographic survey, with the verification of some construction patterns of an evolutionary nature. We opted for a modular architecture, respecting the aesthetic characteristics found in the initial survey, resulting in a one floor residential building, with the possibility of prefabrication of the construction elements. The evaluation of the thermal performance was done through computer simulations of the proposed building and measurements of the thermal resistance of bamboo culms and bamboo sheets. The results found with the simulations, using bamboo panels on the internal and external walls, showed a reduction in the total energy consumption in the building, for simulations with the climatic archive of São Joaquim/SC. Other simulations were carried out with climatic files from other cities in Santa Catarina, which also obtained satisfactory results, to contribute to the use of a smaller number of hours with mechanical air conditioning in the environments, thus reducing the total energy consumption of the building. As for the measurements of the bamboo stalks and sheets, the differences in the values of the thermal resistance of the stalks for the two species of bamboo studied were evidenced, considering the dimensional variation of the internal diameters and thickness of the bamboo, although the measurement of the external diameters is close, around 6 cm. The bamboo sheets obtained a result for the value of thermal resistance/conductivity, closer to the value used in the simulations, than the bamboo stalks. In addition to the study of bamboo, simulations were also made with materials used in the study region (wood and ceramic brick masonry), and the results of each material were compared with the results obtained for bamboo. Thus, it was found that bamboo obtained better results than the other materials, with its use in the walls of the building, external and internal. Only ceramic brick masonry with mortar obtained a better result in one of the simulations. Evaluating the performance of bamboo as a construction material, in regions of Brazilian bioclimatic zone 1, from the point of view of thermal performance, through the simulations and measurements made in this research, it can be said that bamboo contributes to the reduction of total energy consumption in the building. In the case of this research, a one-story residential building, with the specific characteristics of the study.
