Abstract: Cognitive-behavioral therapies consider a variety of processes as etiological and maintenance factors of psychological distress, or as protective and preventive factors. Cognitive distortions, emotion regulation strategies and mindfulness represent central processes in different approaches that make up the set of cognitive-behavioral therapies. It was considered that exploring the relationships between these processes can contribute to the understanding of their transdiagnostic character, in addition to encouraging the possibility of combined application of interventions. Thus, the general objective of this study was to investigate whether there is a relationship between cognitive distortions, emotion regulation strategies, mindfulness and psychological distress in a non-clinical sample of adults. The cross-sectional method of data collection with non-probabilistic sampling was used. Participants were 217 adults aged between 18 and 61 years, of all genders, with complete high school. The instruments used were the Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), Cognitive Distortion Questionnaire (CD-quest), Cognitive Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) and Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS). Data collection took place during the months of July, August and September 2021. Due to the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the collection was carried out online and disseminated in groups and pages of social networks. Participants who consented to the free and informed consent term were directed to the form containing the instruments described. The analysis was performed using descriptive and inferential statistical procedures in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program. To perform the characterization of the sample, the analysis of frequency, mean and standard deviation were used. To investigate the predictive relationship of cognitive distortions, emotion regulation strategies and mindfulness for psychological distress, multiple linear regression analysis was used using the stepwise method. Subsequently, network analysis was performed using the Jeffreys' Amazing 10 Statistics Program (JASP) to verify the relationships between cognitive distortions, emotion regulation strategies, mindfulness and depression, anxiety and stress. The network was estimated using the Gaussian Graphic Model (GGM). The results showed that the increase in cognitive distortions and the low level of mindfulness were the main predictors of psychological distress. Specifics were identified among the emotion regulation strategies for each indicator of psychological distress, however, in general, maladaptive strategies predicted increased psychological distress, while adaptive strategies predicted a reduction in distress. Furthermore, the results indicated the proximity and positive linearity of relationships between cognitive distortions and maladaptive regulatory strategies, and they showed negative relationships with mindfulness, which demonstrates the interrelationship of these processes. The distancing of mindfulness in relation to adaptive strategies evidenced the absence of relationships between these processes. It is believed that this study may contribute to the understanding of how these processes are related, impacting psychological functioning, as well as providing insights into the combination of techniques in clinical interventions with the aim of optimizing the therapeutic results of patients in psychological distress.
