Abstract: This research aims to understand autonomy based on the experience of adolescents who attend a Child and Youth Psychosocial Care Center (CAPSij) in a city in the mountains of Rio Grande do Sul. This work used the epistemological perspective of Jan Hendrik Van den Berg (1981), in which the subject's experience is revealed in their relationships with themselves, with people, with objects/with the world and with time. We understand autonomy based on fundamental concepts for work from the perspective of Psychosocial Care, such as contractual power, co-construction, cooperation and networks of relationships applicable by the subjects. This is a qualitative exploratory research, which used phenomenological attitude tools in its methodology. Twenty adolescents undergoing treatment at CAPSij were interviewed, who had presented demands related to autonomy in the last two years. As a result, we highlighted the predominance of the idea that autonomy is synonymous with self-sufficiency or independence, which is related to adulthood (turning 18 years of age). We also noticed a weakness in the importance of relationship networks in building autonomy and difficulties faced by adolescents in some areas of daily life, such as decision-making, conflict resolution and movement around the city. Regarding treatment at CAPSij, the researched public demonstrates understanding about the impact on their mental health, however there are gaps in relation to the broader vision of health. Working with adolescents requires attention and engagement between different public policies. Establishments such as schools and Coexistence and Bond Strengthening Services emerged as significant places for the experience of adolescents, denoting the importance of articulation between health, education and social assistance. CAPSij is a powerful Psychosocial Care Network device for problematizing and gradually building autonomy both with adolescents, their guardians and the territory. However, we demonstrate that extra-mural strategies are still incipient, as they demonstrate a great impact on work focused on the topic. Furthermore, the improvement of intersectoral actions on the topic of autonomy becomes relevant, in addition to other studies covering different economic, social and cultural contexts at the interface between mental health, adolescence and autonomy.
