Abstract: The aim of this work is to describe and analyze the process of alternation of the second person singular pronouns in the spoken language of Angolan informants living in Santa Catarina. This objective is related to the following specific objectives: a) To identify which form of realization of the second person pronouns (tu and você) is the most frequent; b) To investigate the influence of linguistic factors that involve the process of variation of the pronouns tu and você; c) To investigate the influence of extralinguistic factors that involve the process of alternation of the pronouns tu and você; d) To qualitatively analyze the linguistic perceptions of the informants concerning the variable use of the second person pronouns as well as the corresponding verbal agreement. The theoretical-methodological postulates used in this research are from Variationist Sociolinguistics (WEINREICH, LABOV, HERZOG, 2006 [1968] and LABOV, 2008, [1972]) which consider language a heterogeneous and ordered system. To carry out this work we collected a sample of 20 interviews conducted with Angolan informants living in Santa Catarina. In the first part of the interviews, the questions were about general topics, focusing on the identification and location of the informants and on topics such as leisure, education and public health. In the second part of the interviews, some questions were asked about the way Brazilians and Angolans speak to capture the informants’ perception about the linguistic use of variable forms of the Angolan and Brazilian varieties of Portuguese. All the data of second person singular found in the sample were submitted to a qualitative-quantitative analysis. For the quantitative analysis, we used the first part of the interviews, taking into account the strength of the independent variables filling of the pronominal subject of second person, verbal agreement, complement forms, possessive forms, imperative forms, sex, education, city of origin in Angola, length of stay in Brazil and length of residence in Santa Catarina on the dependent variable forms associated with tu and forms associated with você. The statistical results showed that, out of the total of 853 occurrences analyzed, 652 data were of forms associated with você (76%) and 201 data of forms associated with tu (24%). With respect to the results on the internal and external conditioners, the indices showed that the pronominal alternation is linguistically and socially motivated. For the qualitative analysis, we took into account the informants’ answers about variable linguistic uses related also to the second person singular pronouns. This analysis showed that the informants attribute the variable verbal inflection of the pronoun você to one of the marks of the variety of Angolan Portuguese and the variable inflection of the pronoun tu to one of the marks of the variety of Brazilian Portuguese.
