Abstract: In São Paulo, in 1930, the black population sought to build a lifestyle as social conditions evolved. They founded clubs and associations to encourage sociability and leisure activities, promoting sporting events that gained prominence among black people. One of the main means of disseminating these activities was through the channels of the black press, an association of newspapers that aimed to promote the social integration of black people. Among the newspapers that were part of this organization was A Voz da Raça, which circulated between 1933 and 1937 in São Paulo, produced by the Frente Negra Brasileira, an association of black people that sought to advocate for the social integration of blacks. The newspaper was used to foster and establish social practices, such as sports. Debates on topics such as health, work, and lifestyle of the Brazilian population gained prominence with the eugenic and hygienist currents that influenced the government of Getúlio Vargas. In this study, we analyze the representations of health and lifestyle of the black population between 1933 and 1937, constructed in the newspaper A Voz da Raça based on the sports practices present in the lifestyle of the black population. Supported by the lenses of Cultural History, the study used the concept of “field” from Pierre Bourdieu's perspective on sports practices to understand the power relations established within it and the representations of health generated through it. The use of A Voz da Raça as a historical research source arose from a consultation of its issues in the Digital Newspaper Library of the National Library of Brazil, where we analyzed it as an instrument of power and sociability, producing discourses from the perspective of its producers. The investigation shows that the black population's sports organizations were used as mechanisms to disseminate ideas, values, and instructions by the leaders of the Frente Negra Brasileira, who adhered to the concepts of Getúlio Vargas's government. Thus, they propagated instructions that built the image of a disciplined, organized black person with a sense of belonging to the nation, while simultaneously fighting for the construction of an identity that positively represented black people in society. To this end, the newspaper promoted a lifestyle based on hygienist health representations, emphasizing the appreciation of morals, physical well-being, and patriotism.
