Abstract: Introduction: The National Curricular Guidelines advocate that courses in the health area integrate their teaching with the needs of the Unified Health System, providing a reflective, critical and empathetic training that respects the biopsychosocial peculiarities of the population. However, it is observed that health training programs struggle to transcend the technical approach and prepare professionals that can deal with situations of distress and terminality in perinatal care. Objective: To develop and validate a pedagogical proposal for coping with death and mourning in the context of birth during the training of healthcare professionals. Method: Mixed, sequential-transformative study (quan→QUAL) carried out with professors and students from nursing, psychology and medicine courses at a university located in the southern region of Brazil. The quantitative stage consisted of a descriptive study with 38 students carried out using an online semi-structured questionnaire adapted from the study by Azeredo (2018). The qualitative stage had the participation of 10 professors and two students and was characterized as a participatory study that used focus groups operationalized by using the Charles Maguerez arc, a problem-based learning method. Data analysis was carried out by using Minayo's operational proposal and Paulo Freire's theoretical framework. By integrating data, a pedagogical proposal was developed and submitted to external validation by 12 experts from different areas of knowledge and regions of Brazil. To determine cohesion between the experts, the Committee's Agreement Rate calculation and the Content Validity Index were used and results equal to or greater than 80%(0.8) were validated. Results: The construction of the pedagogical proposal consisted of a collective moment that revealed that the context of birth has little visibility and/or insufficient classroom hours in health training programs, and that the students' sense of preparation differs from reality. Among the challenges found regarding the subject’s approach in the classroom, the following can be highlighted: the development of coping mechanisms, the respect for the individual beliefs and values of those involved and the lack of emotional and pedagogical support in educational institutions. To overcome the difficulties encountered, some solutions were mentioned such as making death a transversal theme in the training process, creating spaces to express grief and forming multidisciplinary study groups. In this way, the pedagogical proposal was developed with the aim of stimulating changes in the health paradigm through awareness, reflection and joint debates on the issue of death, covering its legal and psycho-emotional aspects as well as the type of humanized care that grieving families need. Therefore, it focused not only on the technical preparation of students, but mainly on the development of their psycho-emotional skills. Final considerations: The construction and collective validation of a pedagogical proposal aimed at coping with death and mourning in the context of birth is a promising way to integrate scientific knowledge into the reality of professionals, with potential to contribute to their training process and healthcare practice.
