Abstract: The present thesis aims to analyze the social and political dynamics of the population of Curitibanos between the years of 1912 and 1916, during the Contestado's Sertaneja War. It is, therefore, interested in investigating how the social, political, economic, religious and cultural tensions and conflicts in the city led to the strengthening of the rebel movement and the repression of the republican government. Another purpose was to investigate the actions and agencies of the sertanejos vis-à-vis the judiciary. To this end, a variety of documents were analyzed: court cases, notarial documents, newspapers, books and photographs. By analyzing unpublished judicial documents, it was possible to see how the judiciary acted during the war against the rebellious sertanejos and the colonels' henchmen. Using historians and thinkers connected to microhistory and social history as a methodological reference, we attempted to carry out a case study, in a specific spatial context, with the aim of understanding the actions, strategies and tactics of the sertanejos in confronting this state apparatus, without forgetting that it was necessary to read them against the grain, since most of the documents analyzed were written by the colonels' allies. This work dialogues with the research linked to the study of the Contestado movement, the work on Coronelismo and the penal activity of the judiciary in the Primeira República. As well as reading the research on this sertanejo movement, this thesis seeks to fill in some gaps by delving deeper into the episodes of the war in the urban space, in this case, Curitibanos, and examining the role of the judiciary in this war and its relationship with coronelismo. Two episodes were studied in greater depth: the case of the death of Praxedes Damasceno and the partial burning of the city of Curitibanos. Through these episodes, we concluded that the sertanejos and political opponents found in the war a way to combat the power of the colonels, while, due to their defeat at the end of the war, these people were excluded from the city's political negotiations and were arrested and prosecuted for their war actions. Finally, the research raises contradictions in the legal principles applied as penalties to the sertanejos.
