Abstract: The dependence created by advances in information and communication technologies resulted in the need to use apps and social media for the simplest daily tasks, and, in return, defined social relationships through online interaction, and more eminently, dictated the individual's ways of understanding through the dissemination of narratives, as well as the defining of political-social discussion topics. Thus, the aim of this research is to understand how democratic processes, focusing on elections, are being affected by the manipulation of information through digital media. Through a narrative bibliographical review, the existence of a rationality was verified: the neoliberal rationality. This rationality has restructured society(ies) and built a new type of individual. This new individual has their experiences captured through collection and processing infrastructures, and the data generated by this process is appropriated to generate psychometric profiles. These profiles allow accurate prediction of an individual's behavior. Based on this prediction, any content can be micro-targeted to be as persuasive as possible. This establishes a new form of domination in which information and its processing by algorithms and artificial intelligence can decisively determine social, economic and political processes, which directly affects the democratic system. In order to better characterize this phenomenon, two cases are analyzed: the elections that made Jair Bolsonaro president of the republic in Brazil in 2018, and the plebiscite that determined the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union (Brexit) in 2016. Despite their differences, it’s possible to notice similarities in order, procedures and narratives
