Abstract: Objective: To analyze elements/factors that generate an increase in the workloads of radiotherapy teams working in the treatment of cancer, considering how this work is carried out and the interrelation between norms and subjects' actions. Method: Qualitative research, guided by the theoretical frameworks of Karl Marx's work process, Laurell and Noriega's workloads and Yves Schwartz's ergology. Professionals who make up the teams of three institutions that use ionizing radiation for the treatment of cancer patients participated in the research. For data collection, the triangulation resource was used, with data from documental studies, semistructured interviews and non-participant observation. Twenty-seven professionals gave their consent to participate in this study. Among them dosimetrists, nurses, medical physicists, doctors and professionals of radiological techniques. Data analysis followed the precepts of thematic content analysis, using ATLAS.ti 9.0 software tools. Results: They are presented in the format of three manuscripts: the first, an integrative review, which aimed to analyze the state of the art about the workloads of radiotherapy teams, in the time frame from 2010 to 2022; the second presents the sources of increased workloads of the radiotherapy teams studied, as well as the respective typology of these loads; and the third, analyzes the work of the teams with a focus on the relationship between prescription and action, of subjects and groups that carry out the radiotherapy work activity. The integrative review showed that, worldwide, there is a predominance of psychic loads in the work of radiotherapy teams and that the effects of these loads vary between the different professional categories that comprise it. The global health crisis caused by the coronavirus was one of the factors that intensified, but also reduced, workloads, depending on the professional category and the way in which work was organized. The second manuscript revealed that the main sources of increased workloads for the radiotherapy teams studied were: interprofessional relationships, caring for cancer patients and excess weight in work instruments. Regarding the type of loads, the psychological ones were highlighted, followed by the mechanical and physiological ones. Physical loads were less significant and biological loads were not mentioned. The third manuscript shows that in taking action, workers consider prescriptions, while at the same time renormalizing work. The action involves a dramatic one, in which the subjects consider national and international legal attributions, their knowledge, values, demands and institutional prescriptions (visible or invisible), in addition to the patients' needs. Conclusion: Specificities of radiotherapy practice, conditions in which the work is performed, subjects' perceptions and the way they organize and experience work, can contribute to the increase in workloads, in this study with a predominance of psychic ones. Work activities of radiotherapy teams are mediated by antecedent norms, infidelities in the environment and void of norms, constituting a scenario of permanent renormalization. New investigations on this topic can contribute to deepening the understanding of the phenomenon and formulating strategies to reduce them.
